Learning Aural Tuning
In collaboration with PianoScope, this new online resource has over 5+ hours of videos and content from Timothy Barnes, RPT teaching the fundamentals of aural tuning. Learn from Timothy’s 20+ years in the field as a piano technician, registered piano technician, concert technician, aural technician, and his experience working as a CAUT (College and University Technician). His vast experience working in this trade will help you not only navigate your journey towards mastering the fundamentals of aural tuning, but it will also inspire you to set your bar higher and pursue mastery in every area of your craft.
Beginning In 2022 Gazelle started collaborating with Pianoscope which led to developing this new online resource for learning aural tuning that donates the proceeds to the PTG Foundation and trade groups around the globe.

After 3 years being an ETD only technician with a full schedule tuning multiple pianos a day, my aural skills only went as far as unisons prior to going through this online resource for learning aural tuning from the team at Gazelle & PianoScope.
At the time, learning aural skills seemed like an unattainable goal for me to learn by myself without a local mentor. I felt isolated because I had nobody to help me in person and finding a local mentor was proving difficult in my area. Between this resource from Gazelle and understanding how to better utilize PianoScope’s aural tuning features, I cannot stress how much this transformed my tuning experience. Within weeks, I was tuning aural intervals and shortly after that gaining the confidence I needed to build aural temperaments. Almost immediately after starting to go through this material I felt my ETD tunings improve because I was hearing things I had never heard before. I was also able to better differentiate between tuning issues and voicing issues within the piano. Then out of nowhere, after mentioning to a highly respected colleague in my local area that I was learning aural tuning by going through this material, I suddenly had an invitation to come meet them in person to have them listen to my tunings and provide feedback.
Over the course of the next 8 months I went from knowing nothing about aural tuning, to having the confidence I needed to take the aural portion of the Piano Technician’s Guild RPT tuning exam (and pass at a level much higher than I ever thought possible when I started my aural tuning journey!). I cannot recommend this resource enough to anybody who wants to sharpen their ear and their aural tuning skills!
